"The Hidden Blessings of Alzheimer's"
When my Dad suddenly passed away in the summer of 2001, we felt God calling us to take a leap of faith and move from Texas to Illinois to take care of my Mom, Marie Dubuque, as she journeyed through the stages of Alzheimer's. We learned much during the years of caring for her. Mostly, we learned that God can use anything, even this ugly disease, to heal relationships, to grow us in grace and to deeply trust in His tender, loving, care. Beautiful things came from our caregiving experience and as we move forward we feel it important to encourage others to trust God, through our Lord Jesus Christ, in every circumstance in which He places us.....

Caring for Alzheimer's is a nearly impossible situation. We were only able to keep my Mom out of a nursing home because God gave me so much: my dear, supportive husband and family, friends that came alongside in tangible ways, many part time nursing students, and live-in help via polish caregivers. During my Mom’s last two and a half years of life, she needed total care, just as dependent on us as an infant.
Throughout these strenuous years I kept a prayer journal, logging mostly when God provided in remarkable ways for us. As part of my post-caregiving healing process, I've been reviewing them and expressing them through my creative process. The verses you see displayed here were staples in our everyday life and still prove to be! These paintings are the beginning glimpses of the lessons we learned during our almost 8 years of caregiving.
I desire to point you, my viewers, to hope in God, no matter what your struggle may be because I know from experience that everything else we set our hopes on will eventually let us down. The same God who said, “I won't save you from a distance, I'll come as you came- as a baby”, is the same God who also comes near to us in suffering. I encourage you to draw near to Him as well. We found that from something ugly, like disease, Hope can emerge. We can't fully know all the blessings that have come from our experience, but these things we do know, and look forward to that day in heaven when all will be revealed.
You never forget what He speaks to you out of the storm. May this exhibit encourage and strengthen you! Peace and blessings to you, Friends!
